Motorsport and supercars: Michelin’s winning pair at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show
Motorsport and supercars... The high-performance cocktail MICHELIN revealed this year at the 88th Geneva Motor Show.
Welcome to the new Formula E
Racing first, with the official presentation on 6th March 2018 at the Geneva International Motor Show of the new 100% electric open-wheeler for Formula-E on brand new MICHELIN Pilot Sport tires.
The new, redesigned high-performance and high-endurance tires (with new asymmetric tread) which will fit out all FIA ABB Championship teams in Formula-E from December 2018.
The diameter of the tires remains the same (18 inches) which brings them closer to standard tires, ideal for technology transfer. The printed sidewalls show that they really are competition tires, integrating many technological innovations.
The same diameter, but much lighter compared to the first generation tires with 2kg less in front and 2.5kg less in back for each tire. Or a total of 9kg less per open-wheeler...nearly 20% of the total weight of the tires!
A new completely electric open-wheel car called the Gen2 will debut in competition in the 2018/2019 season. It will then be used for the following three editions. Did someone mention Gen2? The first car created by the International Automobile Federation (FIA), the organization presiding over the future of motorsport. If we compare it to the current open-wheeler, the new generation has pushed the boundaries by doubling its energy storage capacity (therefore doubling its power reserve).
To accompany this (r)evolution, MICHELIN has also worked on the structure and roll resistance of the new MICHELIN Pilot Sport to offer greater efficiency, so the open-wheelers can increase their autonomy and guarantee the best level of performance and safety for the drivers.
Competitors, pilots and teams will be able to cover the total race distance at a faster pace without having to change the tire and vehicles half-way, which is currently the case.
Gen2 and the new MICHELIN Pilot Sport tires today symbolize the increase in performance and the major technological developments in batteries, electric engines and tires achieved since the launch of the first 100% electric competition, four years ago... Developments achieved and tested in competition that you will quickly discover on standard models and tires.

MICHELIN: a partner for supercars
Every edition, the Geneva Motor Show hosts a myriad of supercars: Bugatti Chiron, Mercedes AMG GT R, Porsche 911 GT3, Ferrari 488 Pista, Pininfarina H2 Speed, Sbarro Concept Car F1 Electrique… Competitive cars on the track and on the road that all share one characteristic: they are all approved with one tire model specifically developed for them from the MICHELIN Pilot Sport range, Michelin’s high performance line. Basically, if you like beautiful machines and wonderful combustion, electric or hydrogen engines, you’re in heaven!
MICHELIN Pilot Sport tire, for drivers, on the road and on the track
If driving is first and foremost a pleasure and a passion for you, then the MICHELIN Pilot Super Sport tire is your ideal tire. Replacing the MICHELIN Pilot Super Sport tire, the new MICHELIN Pilot Sport 4 S has tire been designed for the most demanding owners of sports cars and sedans who want the road to feel like the track.
The MICHELIN Pilot Sport range includes two other tires: MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 tire, for track driving, and the MICHELIN Pilot Sport 4 tire, mainly for roads. The MICHELIN Pilot Sport 4 tire, which has been on the market since 2016, came out at the top of the pack in five tests by regulatory organizations, a first for Michelin! MICHELIN Pilot Sport 4 S tire ranks first in the four performances these customers are looking for: braking on dry or wet surfaces, lateral grip on wet roads and roll resistance. Today, the tire is available in 42 sizes.
