How Michelin designs a new tire
At each step, the tire design processdraws on all areas of expertise in the research and development field. The process relies on input from the Marketing teams and field engineers, who use their knowledge of customers, their requirements and the markets to draw up specifications. They are in constant close contact with their counterparts in R&D.
The various steps in the design loop
- Investigation power
- Materials Research
- Modeling / Simulation
- Conception - Design: definition of the tire's structure and tread design.
- Tests and Measurement Industrialization
Did you know?
Based on co-design, the process requires a wide range of expertise from design to industrialization. A need expressed as a "purpose" will become a tire incorporating various new technologies and creating value for the customer. The tire is a multi-scale composite (textile and metal reinforcements with rubber compounds) that strongly affects the vehicle’s contact with the ground and whose performance depends on the manufacturing process and on-vehicle installation. Experts in materials, design, manufacturing processes, simulation tools… all the skills are applied.
More than 350 fields of expertise are grouped in the R&D Michelin.
Modeling and simulation
Simulation and modeling tools are used in research into the internal architecture and tread design , to achieve the desired performances levels. Virtual animations help analyze and understand the various performances in a very short lapse of time. Michelin R&D can use over 400 simulation tools to improve every aspect of the performance of every tire.
Tests and Measurement
In the development phase, loops are necessary between modeling and physically checking the object itself. Test equipment is used to perform these measurements and assure vehicle makers and users of the regularity and reliability of the performances. On-road and test-bench longevity and endurance tests clock up the equivalent of circling the Earth roughly every 12 minutes.
