"Ever since its creation, Michelin has chosen projects with meaning to make mobility safer, more economical and more environmentally friendly. Such progress requires all stakeholders to innovate in terms of both technology and their vision."
1890 - THE PIONEERS
For 130 years, Michelin has combined racing with sustainable mobility, making its mark from the very outset alongside the greatest players in car and motorcycle racing. In 1899, only ten years after its creation, MICHELIN provided the “Jamais Contente”, the first 100% electric car, with the tires that enabled it to reach a speed of 100km/h for the very first time! Basking in in the glory of the greatest prizes in the FIA category (International Automobile Federation) and FIM (International Motorcycle Federation), our Group has been part of every competition ever since.
1998 - THE “MICHELIN CHALLENGE BIBENDUM”
Alongside racing, the 1990s saw Michelin offer the transports and mobility community the opportunity of thinking about new, more sustainable mobility by creating in 1998 the “Michelin Challenge Bibendum”, a forum for debate between scientists, politicians and businesses. This became a world summit meeting, re-baptized “Movin’on”, which twenty years’ later and after 12 events, has become the reference in sustainable mobility. The next event will be held in Montreal from May 30th to June 1st, 2018 – a date for your diaries!
2007 - ENDURANCE AND FUEL CONSUMPTION
In partnership with the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO), Michelin launched the MICHELIN Energy Endurance Challenge at the 24 hours of Le Mans race and for the European Le Mans Series. This is an award that goes to the best teams in terms of a combination of race place and fuel consumption. In 2012, the Audi R18 e-tron fitted with MICHELIN tires was the first hybrid car to win the 24 hours of Le Mans race.
2013 - ENCOURAGING NEW COMPETITIONS…
Right from the outset of the international 100% electric single-seater championship project, MICHELIN acted as founder partner of the ABB FIA Formula-E championship. As official supplier, MICHELIN provides all the teams with a unique 18-inch, polyvalent, high energy yield tire, which offers excellent performance, as well as very low rolling resistance. Now used on the single-seaters in the Formula-E championship, these technologies are destined in the long term to be used on electric vehicles on general sale. Indeed, Michelin sees competitive racing as another of the Group’s research laboratories.
2017… AND ALTERNATIVE ENERGIES
Michelin has been working on the hydrogen fuel cell for over 15 years. True to our habit of using racing to explore the limits of a technology, we are partners in the Green GT project, which presents the only hydrogen electric racing vehicle. Michelin wants to make a contribution to the future of mobility, which is why, from 2017, we became associated with the Roborace project: a pioneering team developing, in the margins of the FIA Formula-E championship, autonomous racing vehicles capable of reaching 300 km/h!
2018 - THE MICHELIN PILOT SPORT TIRE, PERFORMANCE AND ENDURANCE
The futuristic design of next Formula-E cars for the forthcoming 5th season were unveiled at the 2018 Geneva Show and MICHELIN presented its new MICHELIN Pilot Sport tire, designed for these new single-seaters, known as Gen 2. We have worked on the structure and resistance to rolling, to obtain greater efficiency, enabling single-seaters to increase their autonomy whilst guaranteeing optimum performance and safety for drivers.
2019 - THE FIRST 100% ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE COMPETITION
A pioneer in zero-emission races, Michelin is extending its Motorsport partnerships. From 2019 we will equip all the electric motorbikes in the new 100% electric competition organized within the context of the MotoGP™: the FIM Moto-e World Cup. The objective here too is to use racing to make progress with motorbike tires.
By breaking through the frontiers of technology, pioneers at Motorsport Michelin are contributing to improvement in the performance of tires and vehicles, both cars and motorbikes. Performance that the current staff at Michelin Motorsport, like those who have gone before, never forget to associate with sustainable development. Ever at the forefront!
