This is the logic behind Open Lab Mobility, a structure founded in 2014 after the Michelin Challenge Bibendum in Chengdu. It federates over 200 organizations, private businesses, start-ups, towns, experts and more, all committed to fight global warming. In January 2018, this cooperation resulted in the publication of a study entitled: “Speeding up to <2°C: Actionable clean mobility solutions” by Accenture, BNP Paribas, Capgemini, CGI, Dassault Systemes, DHL, Engie, EY, Faurecia, Geodis, Macif, Michelin, Mobivia, Orange, Saint-Gobain, Solvay, Thalès and Total.

An expression of their shared vision of mobility, it inventories the most promising short-term solutions in transport to help achieve the objective of less than a 2 C rise by 2030.
It is the opportunity for Michelin to affirm its commitment to carbon-free transport, in line with the 2015 Paris Agreement which envisages “net zero emissions” by 2050, to keep global warming under 2°C.
TRANSPORT. A KEY PLAYER IN ACHIEVING THE <2°C OBJECTIVE BY 2030
To achieve the Paris Agreement objective of a carbon-free economy by 2050, it is urgent that the transport sector reduce its greenhouse gas emissions as it is one of the world’s primary contributors. It represents 24% of the world’s emissions associated with fossil fuel combustion and if nothing is done, this percentage should significantly increase by 2030. In the absence of quick and ambitious measures, transport emissions could double by 2050, jeopardizing the Paris Agreement.
REINVENTING MOBILITY BY CAPITALIZING ON BEHAVIORAL CHANGE AND TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES
There are many solutions coming from Open Lab Mobility. Some of them are based on existing initiatives which represent inexpensive solutions that can be quickly implemented. Financial incentives to encourage behavioral change, eco-driving training courses, short distance car-sharing apps: these recommendations all underline the necessity to rethink how we travel and demand we turn towards cleaner modes of transport.
Other solutions rely on technologies and infrastructures which require larger investments. The generalization of electric cars thanks to hydrogen technology offers an alternative to fossil fuels. For fifteen years, Michelin has been developing its expertise in the manufacture of fuel cells, essential for a car running on hydrogen. Since 2014, Michelin has been working with Symbio FCell on questions concerning industrialization, maintenance, networks and distribution. This small French company, part-owned by Michelin, is the inventor of the first battery life extender for hydrogen-fueled vehicles. Michel is also a member of Hydrogen Europe, which brings together European industrial companies working to promote hydrogen as an essential solution for our everyday lives, and also the French Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association (AFHYPAC), which federates businesses in the hydrogen and fuel cell industry in France.
A MOVEMENT IS BORN: THE TRANSPORT DECARBONIZATION ALLIANCE (TDA)
The work achieved by Open Lab Mobility is complementary to the Paris Process Mobility Change (PPMC), a more long-term initiative federated by Michelin. Since the COP21, this platform is leading the way in sustainable development in climate negotiations. PPMC is the author of a global macro roadmap for carbon-free transport at the service of a “net zero emissions” economy, focusing on the role of innovative technologies to achieve this objective.
To ensure the systemic transformation of the sector, appropriate legal and business frameworks must be created to encourage innovative solutions and new business models to emerge. In this spirit, at the COP23 in Bonn last November we initiated the Transport Decarbonization Alliance (TDA) jointly with Alstom and four countries: France, Portugal, the Netherlands and Costa Rica. This initiative represents a joint front line of countries, towns, regions and businesses concretely committed to an ambitious program to transform mobility: an alliance that wants to move forward through the implementation of concrete solutions. French President Emmanuel Macron seized his opportunity at the One Planet Summit in December 2017 to remind the audience about the importance of collective action and to urge many organizations to join and extend the TDA, which is officially one of the 12 pledges made during this summit. His call to arms was well-received as Sweden, Norway, Finland, New Zealand, the City of Paris, the state of Colorado, the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, the SNCF, Ernst & Young (EY), Géodis and Renault-Nissan announced their support for the TDA.
A WIDE RANGE OF INITIATIVES COMING TOGETHER FOR MOVIN’ON
Transport decarbonization will be one of the themes of Movin’On 2018: “Inspire and inhale : decarbonization and air quality”. The world summit for sustainable mobility will bring together over 3,000 participants from 30 countries: scientists, entrepreneurs, civil society representatives, visionaries from all horizons.
