Understanding MICHELIN EverGrip™ technology

Presented at the 2014 Detroit show, the MICHELIN® Premier® A/S tire with EverGrip™ technology offers drivers durability and high levels of performance. Safety, optimal grip, and longevity: here is a look at the various performance aspects of this highly-developed technology, which enables the tire to regenerate itself.

What is MICHELIN EverGrip™ technology and how does it work?

This technology enables the tire to offer increased performance levels throughout its service life. The tread pattern self-regenerates as it is used, which means it can deliver a high level of grip even when worn.
It combines three essential elements:

  • Grooves, which are invisible when the tire is new, emerge on the edge of the tread as the tire wears down, thereby compensating for the loss of depth of the rain grooves.
  • The rain grooves themselves widen as they wear down, instead of narrowing as they would usually do.
  • An exclusive rubber compound containing high levels of silica and sunflower oil, which increase grip on wet surfaces.

Overall, this innovative combination of tread pattern solutions enables the 3D pattern concept, which has been marketed and used with excellent results for Heavy Trucks over the past few years, to be extended and made even more effective for Passenger Cars and Light Trucks.

Technologie EverGrip™

( 1 ) Revolutionary High-traction Compound

On a microscopic level, rubber strands form a finer, tighter grid that distributes key additives more evenly. This maximizes wet traction while at the same time maintaining wear-life and fuel efficiency.

  • Incredible wet grip from extreme amounts of silica.
  • More evenly blended materials to maintain wear-life and fuel efficiency.

( 2 ) Expanding Rain Grooves

As the tire wears, rain grooves widen, maintaining their ability to remove water and deliver wet traction.

( 3 ) Emerging Grooves

New grooves - hidden in the rubber - emerge and evacuate water, adding to the ability to grip the wet road.

( 4 ) MICHELIN Total Performance

MICHELIN Total Performance means the MICHELIN® Premier® A/S tire delivers safety, longevity, fuel efficiency, and more, without any trade off. The MICHELINTotal performance philosophy is and always will be at the heart of every MICHELIN Tire.

A Technology in Keeping with Major MICHELIN Innovations

A Technology in Keeping with Major MICHELIN Innovations

Thanks to this self-generating pattern and innovative compounds, the tire offers a high-level of grip on wet surfaces mile after mile. Traditional design conflicts have been resolved: MICHELIN's R&D teams are able to tackle the issue of wear and increase grip performance. This technology follows in the footsteps of the major MICHELIN technological developments that have marked the Group's history.

The history behind this technology involves people working together from around the globe. MICHELIN 's American and European R&D teams formed an effective partnership to bring the technology to market fast.

Proven, Award-Winning Technology

In February 2015, MICHELIN won two awards at the Tire Technology International Awards for Innovation and Excellence 2015, in Cologne, Germany:

  • Tire Manufacturer of the Year;
  • Tire Technology of the Year for its MICHELIN EverGrip™ technology.

The advantages of MICHELIN EverGrip™ on MICHELIN Tires

Designed for the North American market, the MICHELIN Premier A/S tire enables shorter breaking distances on wet surfaces when half-worn than most new tires made by competitors.

Key figures for the MICHELIN® Premier® A/S:

  • 150: the number of additional sipes on the tread
  • New MICHELIN® Premier® A/S tire:
    • + 15%: grip improvement on wet surfaces compared with the previous range
    • + 18 %: snow traction improvement compared with the previous range
  • Used MICHELIN® Premier® A/S tire (tire at wear indicator):
    • + 25 %: grip improvement on wet surfaces compared with the previous range
    • + 50%: snow traction improvement compared with the previous range
