The environmental stakes
Environmental policy
Today, more than ever, we need to take action to preserve and protect the environment. Our natural resources are limited, yet world production and population are constantly on the rise. So we need to give priority to a policy of sustainable development.
‘’Respect the environment now and in the future’’
Michelin has always been concerned with respect for the environment. Furthermore, this concern is reflected in every stage of the tire manufacturing process and throughout the company. At Michelin, men and women are using their ability to innovate to meet the demands of customers and all those concerned with reducing the negative impacts on the environment.
Life Cycle Assessment
Michelin's goal is to optimize protection of the environment. Therefore, in order to fully comprehend its impact on the environment, Michelin has analyzed effects on the environment at every stage of the life cycle of the tire:
Assessing the life cycle of a tire to define our priorities

Analyzing the life cycle of a product makes it possible to identify the environmental impact and the responsibilities of the various players involved at every stage.
Based on this analysis, Michelin has defined the following priorities:

  • protect the environment during production or extraction of raw materials
  • reinforce safety and environmental protection at all its production sites
  • innovate and develop increasingly environmentally-friendly products
  • improve management and recycling of tires at the end of their life span.
Michelin's Environmental Protection Priorities
In 2001, Michelin led a project in cooperation with the European manufacturing profession (represented through the BLIC - the European Association of the Rubber Industry) aimed at measuring environmental impact at different stages of the tire's life cycle. Based on the results, the following conclusion can be made: taking into account the full life cycle of the tire the greatest impact on the environment occurs during actual tire usage.
