A very rich selection in the MICHELIN guide Spain & Portugal 2013

Reaffirming the remarkable quality of Spanish and Portuguese cuisine, the latest edition of the MICHELIN guide showcases the vitality and expertise of a new generation of chefs. The MICHELIN guide Spain & Portugal 2013 includes 7 restaurants with three stars, 19 awarded two stars and 132 with one star.

In terms of gourmet dining, 2013 was an outstanding year in Spain and Portugal. Both countries continued to receive high marks for the quality and diversity of their culinary offerings. What’s more, young chefs in both countries continue to make their mark, surprising diners with the quality of their creative, distinctive cuisine made with local ingredients.

The five restaurants that received three stars in last year’s guide were once again awarded the highest distinction this year: Akelare and Arzak in San Sebastián, Martín Berasategui in Lasarte-Oria (Guipúzcoa), Sant Pau in Sant Pol de Mar (Barcelona) and El Celler de Can Roca in Girona.

Two new restaurants received a third star in the 2013 edition of the guide: Azurmendi in Larrabetzu (Vizcaya), where Eneko ATXA serves up a distinctive, creative, well-balanced cuisine with authentic flavors, and Quique Dacosta in Dénia (Alicante), which features inventive, original cooking that constantly makes innovative use of textures and is firmly anchored in the regional culinary style. With restaurants Akelare and Arzak in San Sebastián, Martín Berasategui in Lasarte-Oria (Guipúzcoa), Sant Pau in Sant Pol de Mar (Barcelona) and El Celler de Can Roca in Girona. Spain has 7 3 stars. They therefore continue to rank among the top 100 or so best restaurants in the world, deemed worthy of this highest distinction awarded for their “exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey.”

Two new restaurants were inducted into the guide’s 2 stars category this year, for a total of 19 restaurants: Enoteca and Moments, both of which are in Barcelona. Located in Hotel Arts, Enoteca offers a cooking style that takes simplicity to a new level by faithfully preserving the flavors and textures of the ingredients, while Moments, housed in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, features a menu based entirely on superior products, imaginatively prepared and combined with ingredients that ensure the highest quality.

In addition, the guide includes 132 1 stars restaurants, of which 17 new entries.

The MICHELIN guide Spain & Portugal 2013 also lists 234 Bib Gourmand restaurants that offer excellent value for money. Whether they are the latest buzz or quaint bistros, offering traditional or inventive cooking, local specialties or world cuisine, all serve a three-course meal at moderate prices (no more than €35 in Spain and Andorra, €30 in Portugal), while respecting the quality criteria of the MICHELIN guide.

Thanks to a uniform, rigorous selection system applied to 23 countries, the MICHELIN guide is an international benchmark for gourmet dining. All of the restaurants featured in the selection were selected by the MICHELIN guide’s famous inspectors, who anonymously travel the roads of Spain and Portugal in search of the best addresses. The inspectors undergo rigorous training so that they apply the same time-tested methods used by MICHELIN guide inspectors throughout the world to ensure a uniform, international standard of excellence. As a guarantee of complete objectivity, Michelin inspectors pay all their bills in full.

The MICHELIN guide Spain & Portugal 2013 goes on sale on November 22 for €23.90. The new edition innovates with a flexible cover, contemporary look and less compact layout, and lists 4,159 addresses, including:
- 2,049 hotels

- 1,683 restaurants
- 131 tapas bars
