DAKAR 2013 Michelin rises the Challenges on all fronts

Pascal COUASNON director of the Michelin Group’s Competition Division

"The DAKAR is an extraordinary adventure ! To take part is the dream of all professional and amateur drivers and riders, but it is also a huge sporting, technical and human challenge. In 2013, and for the next three events at least, Michelin will be a technical partner of the DAKAR with a comprehensive range of car, motorbike and truck tires, plus a round-the-clock support service for competitors.

The DAKAR is a competition that really makes sense for our Group since it combines an extraordinary spectacle at the very highest level with an unrivalled technological challenge.

It covers more than 8,000 kilometres and takes in some of the most abrasive surfaces the planet has to offer, not to mention the fact that certain stages are of up to almost 600 kilometres in length. These are the challenges Michelin faces with its new tire, the MICHELIN Latitude C tire, which combines safety, performance and robustness.

These three properties are indispensable for DAKAR participants, just as they are for South American motorists who have to cope every day with a road network that is only 20 percent sealed. The new MICHELIN Latitude C tire was developed in keeping with the MICHELIN Total Performance policy which applies to all the work carried by the Group’s Research and Development specialists. This approach consists in ensuring the best possible balance of performance factors for all our tire thanks to cutting edge technologies.

The DAKAR serves as a valuable showcase for the qualities of MICHELIN tires which reaches out not only to the 4.5 million South American spectators who turn out to watch the action but also to the estimated one billion viewers who will follow the event on TV across the world. It is also an unrivalled communications platform for the challenges relating to the mobility of tomorrow, and it is precisely with this aim that Michelin and the DAKAR have joined forces to promote safer, durable mobility in the interest of road safety.

While safety on the road is dialled into the specification of MICHELIN tires, it also calls for the education of motorists to ensure they are aware of the dangers they face.

In this part of the world where road accidents are one of the chief causes of death, Michelin and the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) actively promote road safety awareness in the countries visited by the DAKAR by means of an international programme based on 10 golden rules.

In keeping with its values, Michelin uses the most extreme conditions to develop, test and validate its tires in order to share its technologies with all motorists and motorbike riders worldwide. Providing our partners with the best possible on-event service is another of the fundamental commitments of our involvement in those areas of motorsport where competing can make a real contribution to the mobility of tomorrow.

Our involvement also promotes the qualities of our tires and, in the case of the Dakar, plays an important part in Michelin's growth in South America."
